Song: Kaahe Chhed Mohe – Kaahe Chhed Mohe from Devdas showcases Kathak dance, blending classical grace with emotional depth. The song, performed by Shreya Ghoshal & some vocal portions sung by Pandit Birju Maharaj himself, uses Kathak’s intricate footwork, expressive spins, and hand gestures to reflect themes of longing and devotion. The choreography is crafted to enhance the song’s mood, aligning with the film’s opulent early 20th-century Bengal setting. Group 29 Bharatanatyam

Kouttuvam – Kouttuvams are often performed as a form of worship and are deeply spiritual. They are typically sung in praise of deities such as Lord Shiva, Lord Muruga, and other Hindu gods. They are usually dominated by nritta, or pure dance movements, which focus on technical skill and precision, rather than storytelling or abhinaya (expressive gestures). Ganesh Kouttuvam is a specific type of Kouttuvam dedicated to Lord Ganesha. The lyrics often mention his elephantine form, his role as the remover of obstacles, and his status as the lord of wisdom and intellect. Natesha Kouttuvam is another traditional piece in Bharatanatyam, dedicated to Lord Nataraja, the cosmic dancer form of Lord Shiva. “Natesha” or “Nataraja” refers to Shiva as the Lord of Dance, who performs the Tandava, symbolizing the cycle of creation, preservation, and destruction in the universe. The Natesha Kouttuvam is an invocation and celebration of this powerful aspect of Lord Shiva. The lyrics typically praise his attributes, like the matted locks, crescent moon on his head, his damaru (drum), and the graceful yet powerful movements of the dance. Karthikeya Kouttuvam is a traditional Bharatanatyam piece dedicated to Lord Karthikeya, also known as Murugan, Skanda, or Subramanya, the Hindu god of war and the commander of the celestial army. The lyrics typically praise Lord Karthikeya’s divine qualities—his bravery, youthful energy, and his role as the protector of righteousness.

Pushpanjali in Bharatanatyam is a beautiful invocatory dance item that combines grace and devotion. It is derived from the words “Pushpa” (flower) and “Anjali” (offering), symbolizing an offering of flowers with folded hands. This dance is typically performed at the beginning of a recital as an offering to the divine and to pay respects to the audience, setting a reverent tone for the performance that follows.

This Pushpanjali composed in Ragam Gambheeranattai and set to Thalam Chathurasra Ekam, carries unique characteristics:
Ragam Gambheeranattai: This is a vibrant and auspicious raga in Carnatic music, often used for beginning pieces due to its energetic and auspicious nature. It belongs to the melakarta system and is known for its ability to create a joyful and invigorating atmosphere, suitable for the opening of a dance performance.

Thalam Chathurasra Ekam: This is a rhythm cycle in Carnatic music that has four beats in each cycle, providing a straightforward and steady rhythmic base that is ideal for the crisp and clear movements typical of a Pushpanjali.

The combination of Gambheeranattai’s brightness and the straightforward rhythmic cycle of Chathurasra Ekam performed in vazhuvur style makes this Pushpanjali particularly dynamic and joyful, effectively invoking the blessings of the divine and welcoming the audience with warmth and energy.
